Attacker's relative apologises to Naď, police conduct criminal investigation
The police department of the Senec district has launched a criminal investigation for disorderly conduct in connection with an incident in which former defence minister and chairman of the extra-parliamentary Democrats Jaroslav Naď was attacked. According to Aktuality, the attack took place on Monday at a petrol station in Senec.
According to Naď, it was an unprovoked physical and verbal attack by a man whom he described as an "obviously psychologically unstable individual supporting Russians and extremists". The attacker allegedly attempted to extinguish a cigarette directly on his face and provoke a physical altercation, which he failed to do. Naď also accused him of endangering other traffic participants through reckless driving on the subsequent journey to Bratislava.
Naď initially refused to file a criminal complaint, as he believed the matter would end only in a fine of 30 euros for a misdemeanour. Instead, he posted photographs of the attacker and his car on social media. The post was seen by approximately one million people, which led to the public identifying the perpetrator — the politician obtained information about his identity, residence, and employer.
The situation was eventually resolved through direct contact from the attacker's family. "After mutual communication, I have to take my hat off to that person and I accept this apology. No one can be held responsible for their family member," Naď said. The relative apologised on behalf of the entire family for the incident and, according to the former minister, even expressed support for his political activities.
Police confirmed in their statement: "All necessary actions are being taken in this matter in accordance with the law, the aim of which is to properly clarify all the circumstances in which it occurred."
Naď said that the case is personally "closed" for him and he is leaving it in the hands of police. At the same time, he emphasised that he does not intend to back down from similar attacks. "They dare to do it because they think they can, and the responsible authorities do not take adequate action against those spreading hatred. That is, unless the attacks concern representatives of the coalition. Then police activity is extraordinary," concluded the chairman of the Democrats.
