On Saturday evening, a thirty-seven-year-old primary school teacher in Gelnica, eastern Slovakia, lost her life. Her attacker was her own husband. The incident took place in a building the couple used as a weekend cottage. Neighbours heard screams and a row coming from the building. The man then attacked the woman with a cold weapon. At the time of the incident, their minor children were also present in the house. One of the nearby residents managed to attempt a rescue. Details were reported by television station JOJ.
After committing the act, the perpetrator left the scene by car. However, security forces tracked him down on the same day following several hours of operation. They detained him in the area near Košice, not far from the state border with Hungary. The investigator requested his placement in a pre-trial detention cell, as there was a risk that he might evade justice or commit further unlawful acts.
The entire situation raises concerns about how the authorities responsible for criminal proceedings had operated in the preceding period. The perpetrator was found guilty by a court in February of this year for physically assaulting his partner under the influence of alcohol and threatening to kill her. He faced criminal prosecution for serious threats. The sentence was eight months' imprisonment together with mandatory alcohol treatment. Nevertheless, after four months he was released. Only eleven days passed before he committed the murder.
According to information published by Denník N, the victim had herself approached a judicial institution four months before her death requesting an order prohibiting contact with her husband. Judges in Spišská Nová Ves rejected her request. They justified this by saying that at the time the application was submitted, the man was already behind bars, so an immediate meeting posed no risk.
Colleagues and people from the surrounding area confirm that the woman had endured years of a toxic environment in her marriage full of aggression. "Her voice was not heard," said one of her colleagues.
News of her death deeply affected the entire community. At the school where the victim taught, a place to honour her memory was created. Pupils and teachers light candles there. The municipal office established a special crisis team and provided specialist psychological support. Teaching was temporarily suspended and an alternative programme was arranged for the children outside the school building.
