Murder of ex-police officer in Vrakúň returns to court after 17 years
The first-instance court is to reconsider the case of the 2009 murder of ex-police officer Vladimír K. The accused Matej H. has already received 15-year sentences twice, but the appeals court annulled both verdicts. The regional court has returned the case for a third time.

Bratislava City Court I has scheduled a main hearing for 16 July in the case of the murder of former police officer Vladimír K. († 36). The act took place in the Bratislava district of Vrakúň during Christmas 2009. According to experts, the victim died as a result of severe injuries to the abdomen and heart. Matej H. faces charges.
According to available information, the accused avoided police for approximately one year. He claimed he was unaware of the arrest warrant and left the country by chance after the act. He later reported to police with his solicitor, stating that he had been in Italy.
The district court sentenced Matej H. to 15 years' imprisonment twice. However, the appeals court annulled the decision both times due to several procedural errors. In May 2019 the case received a new judge, and in March 2025 another one.
In June 2025 Bratislava City Court I handed down a new verdict – 12 years' imprisonment in a facility with maximum security, protective supervision for one year, and an obligation to pay compensation exceeding €6,200.
However, the regional court in Bratislava annulled this verdict in February for a third time. It justified this on the grounds that the verdict is not reviewable and is based on speculative reasoning. According to the appeals court, the first-instance court did not address the accused's defence or the motive for the act.
