Murder of teacher in Gelnice: man killed her 11 days after release from prison

A woman from Gelnice, who worked as a teacher, became a victim of her own partner. He killed her only a few days after his sentence of deprivation of liberty came to an end. He had been free for only 11 days in total.

The perpetrator had previously served a sentence in prison for making dangerous threats. Judge Daniel Petričko, who currently serves as director general of the criminal and restorative justice section at the Ministry of Justice, commented on the case during an interview with TA3.

According to him, society should consider whether this represents a failure of specific individuals, or whether the system for protecting victims of crime requires change. Discussion about assistance and protection for persons endangered by violence gained fresh urgency following this incident.
