Slovak police detained a 50-year-old Ukrainian citizen in Bratislava who was subject to an international arrest warrant. According to SITA, officers from the targeted search department of the National Central Bureau for Special Types of Crime of the Police Force Presidium of the Slovak Republic tracked him down.
The man is being prosecuted by Ukrainian law enforcement authorities for particularly serious property-related criminal activity. "He is suspected of embezzlement of another person's property through abuse of official position, whereby the acts were allegedly committed in an organised manner," stated the police presidium. The damage was estimated at approximately €4.4 million.
According to available information, the man previously held a significant managerial position in one of Ukraine's sports federations. In committing the criminal activity, according to Ukrainian authorities, he utilised a network of more than 25 fictitious business companies.
During his flight, the suspect deliberately evaded justice through sophisticated methods of concealing his identity and by frequently changing his place of residence. "Nevertheless, officers from the targeted search department of the NCBSTC PPZ managed to obtain information about his movements, locate him, and subsequently detain him in Bratislava," the police stated.
If guilt is proven, the detainee faces a prison sentence of up to 12 years under Ukrainian law. The appropriate judicial authorities of the Slovak Republic will decide on further proceedings, including possible extradition for prosecution, in accordance with international agreements and applicable legislation.
