Shot fired after pursuit: theft suspect arrested at Zanderij

The 21-year-old N.C. sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh on Monday during a police pursuit in the Zanderij area. This is reported by De Ware Tijd. The incident was triggered by a report of theft in the village of Mata, in which a moped, a chainsaw and a brushcutter were taken.

Officers from Zanderij station were on their way to the location when they spotted two moped riders transporting a chainsaw and a brushcutter. Near the centre of Zanderij, the men were stopped for inspection.

During the inspection, one of them managed to escape on his moped. The police pursued him on foot. The suspect then turned around and drove at an agent who was signalling him to stop.

Warning shots had no effect: the man refused to stop. The police then fired targeted shots, with N.C. being hit in his right thigh. He was subsequently arrested.

Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, N.C. has been remanded in custody pending investigation. He was transferred to hospital for medical treatment, where he remains under police guard. The moped, the chainsaw and the brushcutter have been seized. The investigation is ongoing.
