28-year-old arrested on suspicion of raping twelve-year-old niece in Paramaribo
A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Paramaribo on suspicion of raping his twelve-year-old niece. Police also found sharp ammunition during his arrest.
Man evaded arrest for weeks after rape allegation against niece
De Ware Tijd reports that a twelve-year-old girl in Paramaribo told her mother that her 28-year-old uncle, identified as R.W., had sexually abused her. After the mother confronted the man about this, he fled.
In early August, the mother filed a report at Latour police station. However, R.W. managed to evade arrest for weeks by hiding at various locations, according to the Suriname Police Corps on its website.
On 24 September, the Paramaribo Regional Assistance Team, in cooperation with the intelligence service and the Youth Affairs department, succeeded in apprehending the suspect. Law enforcement officers found a number of sharp ammunition rounds during the arrest. R.W. is therefore also suspected of unlawful possession of ammunition.
After consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspect has been remanded in custody. The ammunition found has been seized. The case is being further investigated by the Youth Affairs department.
