Armed robbery on Pengelstraat: victim fired back at fleeing Vitz

A 45-year-old motorist was shot at on Monday afternoon at around 15:30 on J.A. Pengelstraat in Paramaribo by four masked men. The man remained unharmed; whether the robbers were hit has not yet been established. The police are investigating the incident as an attempted armed robbery, according to De Ware Tijd.

The incident occurred near nightclub El Molina and was reported to Herman Gooding police station. Police spokesperson inspector Michael Elskamp stated that four men dressed in black with shoulder-mounted firearms were involved. They made use of a grey Toyota Vitz with false number plate PF-83-05.

From a second source, the editorial team learned that the motorist was driving a Toyota Starlet from Zorg en Hoop towards Maretraite. On J.A. Pengelstraat, he noticed that the dark grey Vitz had been following him for some time. At the intersection with Dr. Sophie Redmondstraat, he stopped at a traffic light. The Vitz came to a halt behind him, whereupon three masked men with firearms got out. One of them fired a shot immediately.

The motorist managed to drive away via the moped path. The armed men gave chase and continued to follow his vehicle until the Vitz collided with the Starlet from behind.

The driver — who was himself armed — got out and fired deliberately at the Vitz. The vehicle was hit by multiple bullets on its right side. The robbers then fled via J.A. Pengelstraat in the direction of Eddy Brumastraat.

Shortly thereafter, police found the Toyota Vitz unattended behind Van Sypesteynlaan, near the cemetery. The suspects had abandoned the vehicle and had presumably fled in another car. The police initiated an investigation.
