A Venezuelan woman and her partner were arrested on Wednesday night at around 01:00 in Paramaribo in a criminal investigation into people-smuggling and labour exploitation, according to srherald.com. The man is known in the community as a DJ.
The arrests were carried out by the specialised Trafficking in Persons (TIP) unit, with support from the Regional Assistance Team Paramaribo (RBTP) and the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU).
According to preliminary investigation, the suspects may be involved in bringing another Venezuelan woman and her two minor children to Suriname. The three travelled from Venezuela via Brazil and Guyana to Suriname. Upon arrival, the woman did not have valid travel documents, according to police.
After her arrival, she is said to have worked in the hospitality establishment owned by the suspects. Police are investigating suspicions of labour exploitation, assault and coercion, and are examining the conditions under which the woman had to work.
The investigation is also examining what role both suspects played in the journey of the woman and children, as well as in her employment in the business. Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, both suspects have been remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
