A soldier attached to the national intelligence and security service DNV has been detained after his service weapon discharged outside a shop in the Flora police district. This is reported by Waterkant. A man who was standing outside the establishment with others was struck in the abdomen by the shot.
Security camera footage shows the soldier displaying his handgun to those present. While holding the weapon and performing actions with it, it discharges at one point. The man in blue shorts is struck by the shot.
According to initial information, the shot was apparently discharged unintentionally. An investigation is to determine exactly what happened and why the soldier produced his service weapon.
The victim was taken to the Academic Hospital on his own initiative following the incident and was left there. No further details have been disclosed regarding his current state of health.
Commander Samuels of the Military Police (KMP) confirmed to Waterkant that the soldier involved was detained after the incident and remanded in custody in the interests of the investigation. His service weapon has been seized.
The case was initially handled by the Surinamese police, but has since been transferred to the Military Police for further investigation.
