Three police officers arrested in mercury theft investigation at Geyersvlijt police station
A third police officer has been arrested in the investigation into the theft of over 500 kg of mercury from Geyersvlijt police station in Paramaribo. The total number of detained officers in the case now stands at three.
Third officer arrested in Paramaribo mercury theft
A third police officer was arrested on Sunday in the investigation into the theft of a large quantity of seized mercury from Geyersvlijt police station. This was reported by De Ware Tijd on the basis of a statement by police spokesperson inspector Michael Elskamp.
The arrestee, identified as C.B., is assigned to the Regional Assistance Team Paramaribo (RBTP). The Capital Crimes department detained him and, following coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office, placed him in custody. With his arrest, the case now involves three detained police officers.
Earlier, two fraud investigators, identified as R.C. and A.K., were already placed in custody. The investigation focuses on the theft of eleven cylinders of mercury — totalling over 500 kilograms — which were removed from a storage container in the rear yard of the police station in Paramaribo-North.
At an earlier stage of the investigation, police arrested four other suspects. Three of them were released after questioning; the fourth suspect was released by the Public Prosecutor's Office following initial custody.
The investigation is ongoing. Police have stated that further information will be shared once there are new developments.
