Suspects arrested after smuggling Venezuelan via Brazil and Guyana

An entrepreneur from Paramaribo and his wife were detained on Wednesday morning on suspicion of human trafficking. The Suriname Police Corps reported this.

The suspect couple — R.S. and L.M.S. — allegedly brought a Venezuelan woman and her two minor children into Suriname illegally. The family allegedly travelled via Brazil and Guyana to Suriname, with the woman not possessing valid travel documents.

After arrival, the victim allegedly was employed in the suspects' catering establishment.

The Criminal Intelligence Unit and the Paramaribo Regional Support Team were involved in the arrest. After consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the couple was remanded in custody. The investigation into human trafficking is ongoing.
