The Suriname Police Force reported via its website that 37-year-old V.T. was arrested on Saturday in Pontbuiten, Paramaribo. De Ware Tijd reported that the arrest took place during a routine checkpoint by the Regional Support Team Paramaribo (RBTP).

At the intersection of Johannes Pont Street and Geertruidaweg, the 34-year-old driver R.B. drew the attention of officers through suspicious behaviour during the vehicle inspection. The three occupants were ordered to step out of the vehicle.

During the inspection of V.T., police found a handgun in his shoulder bag, accompanied by a magazine containing two 9mm rounds. Because the weapon was not covered by a licence, V.T. was taken to Latour police station.

Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, he was remanded in custody on suspicion of violating the Firearms Act. The firearm and ammunition were seized.
