Paramaribo: 22-year-old arrested for violence and threats stemming from jealousy over WhatsApp
Silivio S. (22) was arrested on Monday evening at Teltingstraat. He is suspected of attempted murder, threatening and assaulting a 21-year-old woman.
Arrest following violent incident at Paramaribo car park
Members of the Regio Bijstand Team Paramaribo (RBTP) arrested 22-year-old Silivio S. at Teltingstraat on Monday evening, according to Waterkant. He is suspected of attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, threatening, unlawful imprisonment and assaulting a 21-year-old woman.
The woman filed a report at Munder police station on Saturday, 26 September. According to her statement, the suspect visited her that morning — a man with whom she had been in contact since late August. During their conversation, she received a WhatsApp message from an acquaintance, to which the suspect reacted jealously and pulled her phone from her trouser pocket.
He then ordered her to get into his vehicle, threatening to destroy her phone. The woman got in, expecting to retrieve her device. The suspect drove to a car park opposite Margarethalaan, near COVAB, where he confronted her with messages on her screen.
After reading messages that displeased him, he struck her repeatedly in the face according to her statement and also hit her with a closed fist. He then grabbed her by the throat, causing her to say she could hardly breathe and feared for her life. During the incident, the suspect also produced a handgun and threatened to shoot her.
He then drove further with her in the car and threatened to leave her at a remote location. At a traffic light at the intersection of Ringweg-Noord and Nieuwe Charlesburgweg, he gave her a choice: get out without her phone, or go to her home for further assault.
Once at her home, he ordered her to block all other men on her phone within 24 hours, so that he could check the device again later. The woman stated that he also threatened to set fire to her vehicle and that of her mother. He also claimed to have influential contacts within the Surinamese Police Corps.
The woman suffered pain to her face and throat as a result of the assault. After the incident, she called a friend, who took her to the police. Information from intelligence units eventually led to the arrest of Silivio S. on Monday evening. Following consultation with the Surinamese Public Prosecutor's Office, he was remanded in custody.
