A member of the Regional Assistance Team Paramaribo has been arrested in the investigation into missing mercury at Geyersvlijt police station. At least three police officers have now been apprehended.
Third police officer arrested in Geyersvlijt mercury theft case
The Major Crimes Unit has arrested a new suspect on Sunday 20 September in the investigation into the mercury theft at Geyersvlijt police station in Suriname, according to Waterkant. The individual is C.B., a member of the Regional Assistance Team Paramaribo (RBTP).
The arrest is the third in a series. On Friday, two employees of the Fraud Unit were already apprehended and remanded in custody: police officers R.C. and A.K. At least three police officials have now been linked to the missing mercury consignment.
The mercury had been seized earlier and was stored in a container on the grounds behind the station. According to the most recent police statement, eleven cylinders have gone missing.
Before the arrest of the two fraud investigators, four other individuals were apprehended in this case. Three of them were released after questioning. The fourth was initially remanded in custody but was later released on the orders of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Investigators are focusing not only on establishing each person's involvement but are also attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of the stolen cylinders.
