Waterkant reports that a gun exchange took place on Friday evening on Kraboedoistraat in Suriname between a police inspector and a civilian. The suspect managed to escape following the incident and is still being sought.
The inspector arrived at the address shortly before the firefight, after bystanders had informed him that a man was present at the location carrying a handgun and had threatened bystanders with death. On arrival, the inspector saw the man indeed holding the weapon in his hand.
The officer ordered the suspect to put down the weapon, but he refused. The inspector then fired two warning or intimidation shots in a safe direction. The suspect subsequently fled and fired multiple shots in the direction of the inspector during his escape. The inspector remained unharmed.
A brief gun exchange ensued, after which the suspect disappeared from the area. Neighbours indicated they knew the man and considered it likely that he remained in the immediate vicinity. Police assistance was deployed to search for him.
Police units were present at the scene for some time. The parties involved subsequently went to the police station to file reports. Surinamese police have opened an investigation.
