Two arrested following large-scale Facebook investment fraud
De Ware Tijd reports that R.S. and S.F. were arrested on 1 October by the Quick Response Team of the Suriname Police Force (KPS) in connection with a large-scale fraud case conducted via social media.
The investigation is being led by the KPS Fraud Department, supported by the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU). The matter was prompted by an official complaint from victim T.L., who was approached via Facebook with attractive offers to invest in online trading.
Believing it to be a legitimate investment, T.L. transferred several sums of money to various bank accounts. On R.S.'s bank account, among other amounts, SRD 5,800 was deposited.
When the promised returns failed to materialise and T.L. could no longer contact the service providers, she filed a complaint with the police. Following coordination with the Public Prosecution Service, both R.S. and S.F. have been remanded in custody. The Fraud Department is continuing its investigation.
