Secret landing strip in Goliath area exposed after intelligence operation

A mixed team from the Suriname Police Force travelled to the Goliath area in Para district on Sunday based on intelligence. This is reported by De Ware Tijd. The team consisted of members of the Narcotics Brigade, the Intelligence Service and the Arrest Team (AT).

At the scene, law enforcement officers discovered an abandoned road section that had been used as an illegal landing strip. Fresh tyre marks on the asphalt indicated that an aircraft had recently been operating at the location.

Not far from the strip, the officers found a burnt-out twin-engine aircraft, whose engines had been buried. Across the entire length of the landing strip lay dozens of barrels and jerry cans scattered about. Some of these were filled with aircraft fuel; the rest were empty.

Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM), all barrels containing suspected aircraft fuel were destroyed on site. The OM additionally ordered the illegal landing strip to be rendered unusable. The Narcotics Brigade was tasked with further investigation in the case.

The Suriname Police Force announced its findings on Tuesday via its website.
