Conviction for attempted homicide following attack on INVE complex housing unit

A 15-year-old adolescent was convicted of his participation in an armed attack against a house in the Malvín Norte neighbourhood of Montevideo, during which a six-month-old baby was struck by a bullet in the head. According to montevideo.com.uy, the Justice system ordered his detention at the National Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion (INISA) for a period of two years, as a deprivation-of-liberty socio-educational measure.

The attack took place on the night of 7 May 2026, when three people opened fire on a house in the INVE housing complex. The adolescent identified the occupant of the property as responsible for the death of a friend of his, and the objective was to take his life.

The investigation was headed by the Homicide Department of the National Police and included witness statements that made it possible to link the young man to the shootings. On 3 June he was arrested by officers from the Homicide Department of the Directorate of Complex Facts.

The oral trial concluded on Tuesday. The Office of the Adolescent Prosecutor of Montevideo in the 3rd Shift, represented by Raúl Iglesias and Virginia Gandós, had requested that he be held responsible for a very serious breach of homicide specially aggravated in the degree of attempt, arguing that the attack was committed in the presence of minors.

The defence requested acquittal throughout the entire process and maintained that the adolescent had not taken part in the events. However, the court found his participation proven beyond reasonable doubt and concluded that he acted with the intention to kill.

The sentence did not incorporate the aggravating circumstance requested by the Prosecution and declared him guilty of a serious breach classified as homicide in the degree of attempt.
