Teenage girl from Uruguay found alive in Argentina: man detained for concealing her in his vehicle

Man arrested in Campana after transporting adolescent from Paysandú hidden in his car

Camila Ayelén Rodríguez Caraballo, 15 years old and a resident of Paysandú, was found alive on Sunday, 18 October in Argentina, according to cadenadelmar.uy. A 37-year-old Argentine was arrested in Campana, Buenos Aires province, accused of having transported her hidden in his vehicle whilst crossing the border.

The investigation reconstructed the prior connection between the suspect and the family. Camila's older sister declared to investigators that she had met him approximately one year ago through an escort website. Both maintained a relationship, although she rejected his proposal to formalise the relationship. The man returned to Buenos Aires, but they remained in contact.

On Thursday, 8 October, the Argentine spent the night at the family home in Paysandú. The statements collected by investigators differ about who invited him: the mother pointed to her older daughter, whilst the latter mentioned the father. The following morning, the parents found the adult engaging in sexual relations with the adolescent and demanded that he leave the residence.

On Tuesday, 13 October, the man contacted the older sister again and told her that he was in Buenos Aires. Three days later, Camila disappeared from her home.

Immigration records provided a key piece of information: on Friday, 16 October, the Argentine entered Uruguay at 07:12 and departed at 08:15. For Camila, meanwhile, no entry or exit records were found. According to information confirmed to the 106.5 F.M. station, the man transported her hidden in his car towards Argentine territory.

The disappearance prompted the activation of the Amber Alert in Uruguay and subsequently the Sofía Alert in Argentina, an urgent search mechanism for children and adolescents in high-risk situations. Cooperation between the police forces of both countries made it possible to locate her on Sunday.

The Interior Ministry reported that Camila was found "alive and in good condition". Police authorities announced a press conference for Monday, 19 October, at which they would provide further details of the procedure and the state of the investigation.
