A member of the security forces who was shot on the previous Friday whilst responding to an assault on a residential complex located at Millán and Rodríguez Correa in the Uruguayan capital remains hospitalised in intensive care. Military sources consulted by Montevideo Portal indicated that his condition is delicate, though without extreme fluctuations.
The shot impacted the breast area of the uniformed officer, as the projectile entered through a gap in the body armour. The latest clinical reports indicate that the man is sedated and connected to an artificial ventilator; the left lung, which did not suffer injury, is performing the work of both organs. The medical staff emphasised that the patient's response to medication and treatment is key: the faster he improves, the lower the chances of septicaemia developing.
Local swelling has begun to recede, but it is not yet sufficient for the perforated lung to recover its normal volume. The medical team warned relatives that any infection could severely worsen the prognosis.
The police officer has two young children and became single recently, following the death of his partner after a prolonged bout with oncological illness. In the face of the emergency, the children are under the care of their great-grandmother. Acquaintances of the officer revealed to Montevideo Portal that the father's survival is imperative, as the woman caring for them is already very elderly and cannot look after them with the necessary dedication.
Regarding the dynamics of the crime, the assailants disguised themselves as pensioners to deceive the first officers who arrived. That ploy prevented the security guards from identifying the robbers despite knowing that the robbery was underway. One of the criminals was wearing a jacket similar to that of a mobile emergency service, which increased confusion moments before they drew their pistols.
