A member of the security forces was seriously injured on Thursday afternoon in Montevideo after receiving gunshots during an armed confrontation in the Peñarol neighbourhood.
Everything began when a firearm sound monitoring technology—known as ShotSpotter—detected a burst of gunfire in the area. Following the alert, agents from Operational Zone III were sent to the site to verify what had occurred.
When the police vehicle arrived at the location, the attackers opened fire against the vehicle. One of the officers was struck by the projectiles, suffering wounds to the abdominal area and upper extremities, according to sources from the organisation confirmed to Montevideo Portal.
In the face of the attack, the uniformed officers requested assistance. With the arrival of reinforcements, the agents were able to detain a person who had attempted to dispose of several pistols in the backyard of a house and who subsequently tried to flee.
