Police seized an automatic submachine gun, a rifle, pistols and military ammunition during raids carried out in western Montevideo, according to teledoce.com. A 33-year-old man with a criminal record was detained and placed at the disposal of the Flagrant Offence Prosecution of the 12th Shift.
Repeated gunfire incidents recorded in the area prompted investigations led by the Investigations section of Operational Zone IV, aimed at dismantling criminal groups operating in the sector.
On Wednesday, during a raid in the vicinity of Miguel Ariguru and Juan León streets, in the La Paloma neighbourhood, officers found an automatic submachine gun with magazine and ammunition, a pistol with fire selector and two magazines. Ammunition of different calibres and 43 units of paste base were also seized. A 33-year-old man was detained during this procedure.
On Tuesday afternoon, as part of a parallel investigation likewise linked to gunfire, the same investigators carried out another raid in the vicinity of Rusia and Patagonia streets, in the Cerro neighbourhood. There they seized a rifle, two pistols and various military ammunition whose origin remains unknown.
All weapons were examined by the Scientific Police. The operations were supported by the Special Tactical Support Unit of Montevideo.
