Uruguayan authorities apprehended a 31-year-old man during search operations carried out in the Barros Blancos and Melilla areas in the country's capital. He is under investigation for suspected involvement in the armed robbery perpetrated against a geriatric centre in the Atahualpa neighbourhood, an incident that took place the previous week.
The robbery occurred on the preceding Friday, when three men entered the property posing as employees of the State Health Services Administration. The intruders wore clothing similar to that of the public agency and, inside the premises, overpowered staff members who were on duty.
The situation escalated when police officers arrived at the scene and the robbers were still inside. An exchange of gunfire ensued in which one officer was struck in the protective vest at chest level, whilst a female colleague suffered a gunshot wound to one of her lower limbs. The attackers fled the scene without being captured at that moment.
Subsequently, an extensive search operation was deployed that included aircraft, armoured units and numerous officers. The teams inspected homes one by one, as well as rooftops and rubbish bins, in search of evidence that would allow them to locate the fugitives.
The story was initially reported by the Subrayado news programme on Channel 10 and later confirmed by the Ministry of Interior to El Observador.
