Cuban man charged with stabbing fellow countryman in Cordón, Montevideo

A 32-year-old Cuban citizen was charged with the homicide of another Cuban, aged 38, which occurred on Thursday night at the corner of Avenida Uruguay and Vázquez in the Cordón neighbourhood of Montevideo, according to cuballama.com.
The victim was attacked with a bladed weapon whilst being chased by several people. Despite suffering serious wounds, he managed to take refuge in a nearby shop, where he reported that he had been threatened and assaulted. He was transferred in critical condition to Hospital Maciel in Ciudad Vieja, where he was taken to theatre and died shortly afterwards.
Police detained another Cuban as part of the investigation and handed him over to the public prosecutor's office. The accused man must remain in preventive custody until 17 February 2027. The case was taken up by the Homicide Department of the Directorate for Complex Crimes and the Homicide Prosecution Office of the 1st shift. To date, the identities of those involved and the possible motive for the crime have not been revealed.
The incident adds to a series of violent episodes affecting the Cuban community in Montevideo in recent months. On 31 July, a 28-year-old Cuban died from stab wounds in a boarding house in the Paso de la Arena neighbourhood following a dispute with a Venezuelan man who also lived in the building. The victim suffered wounds principally to the neck and abdomen and died at Hospital del Cerro. According to local media outlet Telenoche, he had "extensive criminal history abroad".
In April, José Eduardo Cuéllar Arteaga, a 31-year-old Cuban delivery driver, was shot dead during an attempted theft of his motorcycle.
Uruguay has become one of the principal destinations for Cuban migrants in South America. In 2025, more than 22,000 Cubans entered the country, a figure that almost triples that of the previous year.
