A court in Lavalleja handed down a sentence of ten months' imprisonment to Braian Nicolás Morín Maciel, aged 26, after finding him guilty as co-perpetrator of two instances of computer fraud committed on a repeated basis.

The sentenced man will serve his time in a rehabilitation prison facility. He had a previous conviction for the offence of receiving stolen goods.

Officers from the Department of Complex Crimes conducted the investigation. During the course of the inquiry, the criminal network to which the defendant belonged was dismantled, with nine other individuals having already been ruled against.

The fraudsters circulated tempting offers via Facebook and WhatsApp. Using fraudulent links and impersonating the identity of banks, they employed tricks to get users to provide their credentials and account numbers, causing them serious financial losses.
