A student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Republic was charged on Wednesday with specially and very specially aggravated homicide for attempted femicide, according to infobae.com reporting from the EFE news agency.
The Public Prosecutor's Office stated in a statement that the accused will be subject to a precautionary measure of 180 days' preventive detention. During the first 30 days, he will remain in a mental health facility for evaluation.
The attack occurred on 1 September, when the 19-year-old woman was stabbed by a fellow student on the faculty premises during afternoon hours. Police personnel arrived at the scene after being alerted to the incident, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior. The young woman sustained multiple wounds from a knife, which was seized at the scene; she was assisted and transported to a health facility. The attacker was detained at the location.
Prosecutor Luis Pacheco stated to the press that the characteristics of the act evidence an intention to kill the victim. He also explained that the aggravating factor of femicide applies when there are motives of hatred, contempt or disrespect towards a woman, elements which—according to the evidence gathered—are present in this case.
The incident led the University of the Republic to suspend classes for several days to carry out institutional reflection activities. In a statement, the institution acknowledged "the shortcomings and challenges that persist in institutional responses to gender-based violence" and renewed "its commitment to the development and strengthening of actions within its gender policies for the university community".
The university tasked the Open Commission on Equality and Gender—with participation from the Rectorate, gender spaces at the Udelar and specialists on the subject—with drawing up, within a period of 60 days, a plan of concrete actions on the matter.
