According to infobae.com, the student who stabbed a fellow student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Republic of Uruguay was charged this Wednesday with homicide that is especially and most especially aggravated by femicide in the form of attempted homicide.
The public prosecutor's office confirmed in a statement that the defendant will be subject to a precautionary measure of 180 days of preventive detention. During the first 30 days, he will remain in a mental health facility for evaluation.
The attack occurred on 1 September in the afternoon, when the nineteen-year-old woman was stabbed by her fellow student inside the Faculty of Medicine. Police personnel arrived at the scene after being alerted to the attack. The victim was found with several wounds caused by a blade weapon, which was seized at the scene, and was transferred to a health facility. The attacker was detained at the scene.
Prosecutor Luis Pacheco told the press that the characteristics of the incident demonstrate an intention to kill the victim. He added that the aggravating factor of femicide applies when there are motives of hatred, contempt or disrespect towards a woman, feelings which, according to the evidence gathered, are present in this case.
The Ministry of the Interior also confirmed the details of the operation in an official statement.
The incident prompted the University of the Republic to suspend classes for several days in order to carry out acts of institutional reflection. In a statement, the institution acknowledged "the shortcomings and challenges that persist in institutional responses against gender-based violence" and renewed "its commitment to the development and strengthening of actions of its gender policies for the university community".
The university tasked the Open Commission on Equity and Gender—with participation from the Rectorate, gender spaces at Udelar and specialists in the matter—with drawing up a plan of concrete actions within a timeframe of 60 days.
