In the early hours of Friday, unknown individuals entered the home of Silvia Moreira, the woman killed by her ex-partner in the Cerro Ejido neighbourhood of Artigas, according to subrayado.com.uy. Police recovered the stolen items and arrested those responsible for the robbery.
The attacker, identified by the initials R.D.S., was transferred to the Reception, Diagnosis and Referral Centre in Montevideo for security reasons, given the strong shock the crime caused in the city.
The attack and surrender to police
The femicide occurred in the early hours in the same home in the Cerro Ejido neighbourhood, in the south of the city. Local police spokesperson Lady Fuques indicated that the victim was in bed and that, according to presumption, she was attacked whilst sleeping.
Moreira was shot with a firearm in the arms; one of the bullets damaged the carotid artery, according to the forensic report. Subsequently, the attacker inflicted wounds on her with a sharp weapon. The two children of the ex-couple, aged 7 and 11, were in the home, according to the police report.
The man voluntarily surrendered at the Domestic and Gender Violence Unit of the 2nd precinct station, where he also handed over the weapons used: a knife and a .22 calibre firearm. Following his confession, officers proceeded to the scene and found the body. "The autopsy determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound with compromise of the carotid artery," states the official report.

Subrayado.com.uy learned that there was a history of domestic violence in the relationship, although no prior complaints had been filed with police. The man worked in the rural area and continued visiting the home despite the relationship having ended. R.D.S. has no criminal record.
The two children were placed under the protection of INAU by order of the Public Prosecution and the judiciary.
The defendant must serve 180 days of preventive detention for the offence of murder with especially serious aggravating circumstances, committed in the presence of minors and classified as femicide.
