A 19-year-old young woman was killed during the evening of Wednesday in the middle of a street in Ciudad del Plata, a locality in the department of San José. The main suspect is a 21-year-old neighbour who, according to police sources cited by la diaria, voluntarily turned himself in at a neighbourhood clinic whilst carrying the weapon used.

The tragedy occurred at the intersection of Rivera and Treinta y Tres streets. Neighbours who witnessed the assault contacted the emergency service 911. Upon arrival, officers found the young woman lying on the ground with no vital signs. The doctors who attended the scene confirmed her death.

Shortly afterwards, personnel from the police station received notice from the health centre known as "Hospitalito". The attacker had arrived there, carrying a knife and admitting that he had fatally wounded the student, expressing that he felt hatred towards her.

Both had been students together at Liceo Libertad Lausarot and lived in close proximity. The accused remained in custody under the authority of the Judiciary. To date, no record of previous complaints against him has come to light.

The educational community to which the victim belonged declared an interruption of academic activities. Through digital platforms, the authorities of the school distributed a statement in which they lamented the loss and urged society to debate the manifestations of machista violence.
