Escape from Inisa in Montevideo: Agustín Cuello, 20, convicted of killing a police officer
A 20-year-old man responsible for multiple homicides, including that of a police officer, escaped from an Inisa centre in Jardines del Hipódromo. Authorities are searching for him.

Homicide convict escapes from Inisa by breaking bars in Montevideo
Agustín Cuello, aged 20, fled in the early hours of Tuesday from a centre belonging to the National Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion (Inisa) located at the intersection of José Belloni and Aparicio Saravia, in the Jardines del Hipódromo neighbourhood, according to teledoce.com.
Cuello was serving a sentence as a co-author of especially aggravated robbery and very seriously aggravated homicide, under a system of consecutive sentences. Among the crimes that led to his detention was the murder of police officer Joel Rodríguez, aged 35, who died after being shot during a high-displacement motorcycle theft in Punta Gorda in July 2025. Cuello did not fire the shot, but was part of the La Cruz de Carrasco gang responsible for the incident.
How the escape occurred
According to sources cited by Telemundo, the young man broke through some containment bars and jumped over a wall onto Aparicio Saravia street. Security cameras subsequently recorded him running along César Cantú street in the direction of Leandro Gómez. At the time of the escape he was wearing a black hoodie, jeans and white trainers.
This is not the first time Cuello has managed to escape. In February 2025, when he was being transported to a sporting activity in Canelones, he had already absconded from Inisa custody. On that occasion he was serving time for another homicide committed whilst a minor.
"Dangerous" according to police sources
Police sources described Cuello as "dangerous": on more than one occasion he has made death threats against system officials and has shown no remorse for the crimes for which he was convicted.
From Inisa, sources at the institution told Telemundo that they are awaiting an internal report with "exhaustive details" about what occurred and that the established protocols have already been activated.
Authorities continue their search.
