A member of the police force in Castillos, Rocha, used her social media accounts to express her concern after learning that a man detained for domestic violence and assault on officers regained his freedom just hours after his arrest. The incident took place during the last weekend.
According to a report published by Montevideo Portal, the man forced his way into the house where his former partner lived, caused material damage and engaged in a physical confrontation with a friend of the property owner. Alerted by neighbours, officers went to the address to apprehend the offender.
The procedure was not straightforward. The detainee, who has training in hand-to-hand combat disciplines, put up fierce resistance. During the confrontation, an officer suffered a broken tooth as a result of the impacts. Only after a prolonged struggle were the police able to handcuff him and take him to the station.
The situation deteriorated inside the cell. The arrestee struck himself, and when guards attempted to calm him down, a female police officer was also struck by the individual.
Despite the seriousness of the events, the prosecuting authority ordered his release with a summons for mid-July. That decision prompted the officer from Castillos to post her complaint online.
The officer recalled a difficult period of her life when she felt abandoned by the judicial system whilst raising her daughter alone. "My situation is already resolved, but someone will take note of what happens in a small town where police officers live among the people and respond daily; we all know everyone's address, and we don't deserve retaliation outside of our duty for doing our job," she said, according to local media Notytemas cited by Montevideo Portal.
Additionally, the officer called on magistrates to show greater sensitivity: "I question the lack of empathy shown at the moment of issuing judicial rulings by those who are supposed to be fair and impartial and protect us. Don't wait for things to happen: act and prevent greater harm!"
The conflict did not end there. Once on the street, the man returned to watch the home of the victim and placed an item of clothing at the entrance of the property, a gesture interpreted as intimidation. In response, a new arrest warrant was issued. Learning of this, the man turned himself in at the police station and was again deprived of his liberty, with the expectation of appearing before the judge in the coming hours.
