Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found with a head injury in Montevideo's city centre in the early hours of Friday, confirmed by the Interior Ministry, according to elobservador.com.uy.
The victim, still unidentified, was found lying beneath the awning of a food cart. An emergency medical team confirmed death at the scene. Authorities are seeking to determine whether the injury was caused by another person or whether it was an accidental fall.
Officers from the Homicide Department and Scientific Police, together with the Public Prosecutor's Office, are conducting the investigation. Security camera footage from the area is being reviewed. The body was taken to the morgue for identification and to establish the cause of the head injury.
Second violent death in less than 24 hours in Montevideo
The night before, but in the Parque Batlle neighbourhood, a 32-year-old man was shot dead. According to initial police information, the victim arrived at the location in a Nissan car accompanied by another man.
Upon getting out of the vehicle, the victim engaged in an argument with a person who came out of a house in the area. During the altercation, that individual shot him with a firearm. The victim fell next to the car and died at the scene.
The man who accompanied him fled on foot, flagged down a taxi and requested to be taken to the INVE housing complex in Malvín Norte. Investigators managed to identify and locate him. That same person had an active warrant for a domestic violence case.
The case was assigned to the Homicide Department of the Directorate of Complex Cases. During the morning of Thursday, police carried out a raid on the house in Parque Batlle linked to the location of the homicide. The investigation continues in order to determine the circumstances of the crime and identify the person responsible for the shooting.
