Court upholds Cabral bankruptcy in Conexión Ganadera case
The civil appellate court of the seventh chamber ruled to maintain the insolvency declaration of Daniela Cabral, widow of Gustavo Basso and one of the main suspects investigated in the Conexión Ganadera financial scandal. The ruling affects her as a private individual and prevents her from administering the assets included in the bankruptcy proceedings.
According to what was published by Montevideo Portal, the judges examined her participation in Don Coraje, a company that remains in operation, and concluded that she carries out her own commercial activities. Cabral is under house arrest in Punta del Este.
During the questioning, the woman stated that she possesses a credit for 30,000 US dollars originating from a livestock investment agreement that was extended on repeated occasions from 2011, with direct links to Conexión Ganadera. The Don Coraje company was responsible for administering the herd acquired by the company of Carrasco and Basso, who acted as livestock receivers. Cabral also maintained that her private residence is in Punta del Este, different from the company headquarters located in Florida.
The judges determined that her role within Don Coraje corresponds to that of a business executive.
Previously, in the month of May, the same judicial body had validated the compulsory bankruptcy corresponding to Basso's estate within this same proceeding. That determination had been suspended during March of the present year by order of the court.
In the criminal sphere, three people are formally charged: Daniela Cabral, accused of fraud and under house arrest; Pablo Carrasco, prosecuted for money laundering; and his spouse, Ana Iewdiukow, also accused of the same offence. Both remain in preventive detention.
The initial court had decreed the bankruptcy over the assets and funds inherited from Basso following his death, a ruling that was subsequently appealed.
