Major operation in Cerro Norte: four detained and weapons seized from criminal gangs

Twenty simultaneous raids in Cerro Norte target two criminal organisations

Montevideo Police executed 20 simultaneous raids in the Cerro Norte neighbourhood on Tuesday 25 June, with the aim of dismantling Los Colorados and Los Suárez, the two main criminal organisations operating in the area, according to confirmation by montevideo.com.uy from Interior Ministry sources.

The operation resulted in at least four detentions: two linked to each gang. One of them would be a leader of Los Colorados, according to reporting by Subrayado (Channel 10).

The police report identifies those arrested as a 25-year-old man with three criminal records, investigated for his membership in a criminal group in the area, a 25-year-old woman, and two other men aged 21 and 44 respectively.

Among the seized material are five air rifles, a Glock pistol, an AR-15 submachine gun replica, seven mobile phones, three USB drives, 13 cartridge cases, 29 rounds, $61,830, US$3,000 and a motor vehicle, amongst other items. The authorities believe the weapons were used "to commit various criminal acts that are being investigated".

The operation was headed by the Investigations Area of Operational Zone IV and the Anti-Drug Brigade of Montevideo. Also participating were the Republican Guard, the K9 dog unit, Unatem, PADO, Police Aviation and the General Directorate of Special Operations.

Montevideo Police Headquarters noted that "the intervention aims to dismantle criminal groups and prevent further episodes of armed violence in the area, reinforcing security and police presence in Cerro Norte".
