Major police operation in Cerro Norte: four detained and weapons seized

Twenty raids in Cerro Norte target the two most active gangs in the neighbourhood
Montevideo Police executed 20 simultaneous raids in the Cerro Norte neighbourhood on the morning of Tuesday 25 August, with the aim of dismantling Los Colorados and Los Suárez, the two main criminal groups operating in the area. According to sources from the Ministry of the Interior confirmed by montevideo.com.uy, the operation resulted in at least four detentions.
Of those arrested, two are linked to each gang. One of them is said to be a leader of Los Colorados. The police report identifies the detainees as a 25-year-old man with three criminal records, investigated for his membership of a criminal group in the area; a 25-year-old woman; and two other men aged 21 and 44.
Among the goods seized were five air-rifle guns, a Glock pistol, an AR-15 sub-machine gun replica, 29 cartridges, 13 casings, seven mobile phones, three USB drives, 61,830 pesos, US$3,000 and a motor vehicle, amongst other items. The authorities believe the weapons were used "to commit various criminal acts that are being investigated".
The operation was headed by the Investigation Unit of Operational Zone IV and the Anti-Drug Brigade of Montevideo. Also participating were the Republican Guard, the K9 dog unit, Unatem, PADO, Police Aviation and the General Directorate of Special Operations.
Montevideo Police Headquarters indicated that "the intervention is aimed at dismantling criminal groups and preventing new episodes of armed violence in the area, reinforcing security and police presence in Cerro Norte".
