Interior Minister Carlos Negro spoke on Friday about the quintuple homicide registered at a house in the El Monarca neighbourhood, on the outskirts of Montevideo, and announced that controls in the area will be intensified. He also indicated that a "restructuring" of Montevideo Police Headquarters will be carried out.
The incident, which shocked the country, resulted in five family members dead, including a 14-year-old teenager who had initially survived but died during the morning. The victims were inside a house when they were attacked.
According to information accessed by Subrayado, the Suárez family is linked to criminal activities and operated in the Villa Española neighbourhood. A woman who spoke with the media was present at the location when the massacre occurred.
Minister Negro linked the crime to disputes between criminal groups and promised greater operations in the area, although he made the measure conditional on having more human and material resources. He also informed that armoured vehicles for patrol duties will be available in approximately ten days.
The case is being investigated by the Homicide Department of the Directorate General of Complex Cases, under the direction of the competent prosecutor's office. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
