A 42-year-old woman died from stab wounds in her home in Ciudad del Carmen, Uruguay, at the hands of her 41-year-old partner. At the time of the crime, the victim was caring for three underage girls—aged 9, 11 and 12—along with her own 13-year-old teenage son. The four minors witnessed the attack.

According to reporting by Infobae, the incident occurred around half past six in the morning on Saturday in the Laguna neighbourhood. After receiving the stab wounds, the woman managed to call for help from neighbouring residents, who alerted law enforcement and emergency services. Despite efforts, the injuries proved fatal.

The couple had been in a relationship for 21 years and shared two children. The authorities confirmed there were no previous reports of complaints between them. The deceased worked as a childcare provider and had a good reputation in the community.

The man responsible left the home after committing the act, though police officers later found him in a rural area approximately six kilometres from the scene. The Interior Ministry released video footage of the arrest operation.

On Monday, the judiciary charged the suspect with femicide with special aggravating circumstances, considering that the killing occurred in the presence of minors. As a procedural restriction, he was ordered confined to a health institution for a period of four months, renewable until a medical team determines his mental condition. The Public Ministry also requested a psychiatric evaluation to establish whether the defendant had the mental capacity to understand the criminal nature of his conduct.

Various government agencies are currently providing support to the four children who witnessed the incident, particularly the 13-year-old who saw his mother's death. Neighbours in Ciudad del Carmen took to the streets demanding punishment.

This homicide is part of a concerning pattern of lethal gender-based violence in Uruguay. Various local media outlets cited by the source indicate that within a span of less than ten days, at least two other women were murdered by their partners, while the Ciudad del Carmen case constitutes the fifth femicide in the last month. Women's rights advocacy groups have maintained an active alert regarding this situation.

A relative of the victim, interviewed by Telenoche on Channel 4, described the family's suffering and called for the accused not to be released. She emphasised that his actions left two children without a mother.

The judicial investigation remains ongoing.
