Off-duty police officer repels robbery and wounds attacker in chest
An 18-year-old offender with no criminal record was shot and wounded on Monday at midday after attempting to rob a police officer working as a delivery driver in the Punta de Rieles neighbourhood, according to police sources who confirmed the information to elpais.com.uy.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Camino Guerra and Aries streets, near Route 8. The assailant arrived on a motorcycle, approached the delivery driver, threatened him with a weapon and demanded the collection money.
The delivery driver identified himself as a police officer, ordered the assailant to stop and repelled the attack. The youth received a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to a health centre; his condition is not life-threatening. The police officer was not injured.
At the scene, officers from the Mobile Police Response Unit (URPM), personnel from Zone III Investigations and the Scientific Police intervened. Tests will be carried out on the weapon found at the scene and on the motorcycle, which had no registration plate.

Woman detained for homicide of elderly man in Maldonado
In a separate incident, a 51-year-old woman was detained as part of the investigation into the death of a 79-year-old man in the locality of La Capuera, Maldonado, according to information released by the departmental police headquarters.
The victim was found dead on Friday at his residence with burns to his back and head. A three-kilogramme gas canister was found near the body.
The Complex Cases unit assumed responsibility for the investigation and identified the alleged perpetrator. Although the woman was detained and presented before the courts in an initial hearing, the decision was subsequently made to release her from detention and to apply restrictive measures for a period of 180 days.
Among the restrictions imposed is a prohibition on approaching or communicating with the victim's daughter, who also resides in La Capuera. The courts also ordered that the defendant undergo psychological assessment to determine her emotional state and to establish whether she has suffered episodes of sexual abuse or domestic violence.
