A police operation carried out in the city of La Unión, San José department, resulted in the discovery of a residential facility for elderly people operating irregularly. Inside the premises, officers found several older adults living in overcrowded conditions, who were calling for help loudly.
The intervention took place following a complaint that alerted authorities to the situation at the property. Upon arriving at the scene, uniformed officers verified that the establishment did not have the proper authorisation to function as a care home for the elderly. Additionally, they confirmed that the elderly residents were in confined spaces, without the minimum habitability and care conditions required by current regulations.
The authorities ordered the immediate transfer of those affected to authorised assistance centres, where they received medical attention and were taken into custody. An investigation was initiated to determine the responsibility of those administering the facility and the possible criminal offences associated with the abuse and exploitation of vulnerable persons.
