A 40-year-old military officer was charged with negligent homicide after killing a motorcyclist whilst driving head-on in Canelones, with three INAU teenagers on board.

According to ladiaria.com.uy, the prosecutor for Las Piedras of the 3rd shift, Mariana Rodríguez, requested the formalisation of the investigation against a 40-year-old man, an Army sergeant, who on Monday night collided head-on with a woman riding a motorcycle whilst he was driving in the wrong direction. The woman died as a result of the accident.
At the time of the accident, the sergeant was transporting in his vehicle three teenagers under the protection of the Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay (INAU), all belonging to a centre in Canelones. All three had been the subject of a search by authorities following detection of an unauthorised departure from the facility.
Justice charged the military officer with negligent homicide in actual reiteration along with aggravated supply of narcotics. As a precautionary measure, preventive detention for 120 days was ordered.
The president of INAU, Claudia Romero, spoke on Tuesday at a press conference. She indicated that two of the three teenagers returned home following the accident. The third was admitted due to "indicators of substance use" and to "certain alarms linked to a situation of sexual exploitation that we are investigating", Romero stated.
