According to montevideo.com.uy, National Party senator Sebastián Da Silva spoke out about the conviction of Gonzalo Gómez, adviser to the white-party councillor in Montevideo, who faces a sentence for money laundering linked to drug trafficking.
The case originated in a police operation that resulted in the seizure of 265 kilogrammes of drugs, three million pesos, US$42,564, ammunition, high-end vehicles and a banknote-counting machine.
"It is a serious case," Da Silva stated in an interview with broadcaster Leo Sarro. "We need to be clear that we have to eradicate this from the National Party. We cannot be worrying about drug trafficking all day and then suddenly be in this kind of situation," the legislator added.
Da Silva maintained that "every so often drug traffickers slip into party structures". "The Broad Front is full of circumstances, we have had some. It cannot be that this type of situation tarnishes the principles of the National Party," he noted.
Regarding Gómez, the senator indicated that the convicted man "was abused in his trust". Likewise, Da Silva considered that the convicted man's son, a member of the white-party youth movement, should also not continue in the nationalist ranks.
