A 40-year-old man returning home from work by bicycle lost his life on Tuesday night in Montevideo after becoming trapped in an exchange of gunfire between two criminals on the streets of Torricelli and Salustio.
Police arrived after a citizen alert reported a shooting in the area. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the cyclist collapsed on the asphalt next to his vehicle. Although he still showed signs of life, the following minutes proved fatal; emergency personnel confirmed his death at the scene.
Initial investigations indicate that the deceased was an employee from the area who was heading home when he became caught in a crossfire between two criminals. According to accounts from people who witnessed the events, the worker tried to run away, but the attackers did not cease their shooting. A witness reported that one of the gunmen, described as having a youthful appearance, shouted at the victim: "There is something for you too".
To date, the authorities have managed to identify potential suspects involved in the crime, although no persons have been detained yet. The investigation remains open pending new evidence that will allow arrests to be made.
