Police officers charged in death of young man transported in patrol car in Canelones

According to subrayado.com.uy, the courts charged three police officers with the homicide of a 30-year-old man in Canelones, in formal concurrence with an abuse of authority charge.

On 21 July, the young man's mother called 911 because her son had become unwell after consuming drugs at his home in San Antonio. The officers transported him to San Ramón Hospital, which he left without visible injuries according to initial medical examinations.

When returning him to his home, the police officers told the mother that the man would sleep for approximately three days. She assumed he had been given medication. It was another of her sons who noticed that the victim was not breathing: he was already dead.

The investigations led to a formalisation hearing on Wednesday. The three police officers were charged as perpetrators and sent to preventive detention for 120 days, until February 2027.

The Public Prosecution Service continues gathering evidence to advance towards a possible trial and to determine the final sentence. The investigation remains open to establish with precision what occurred between the transportation to the hospital and the young man's return to his home.
