One dead and three injured by gunfire in Montevideo in less than 24 hours

Montevideo Police are investigating a homicide and three incidents with gunshot injuries that occurred in less than 24 hours in the Uruguayan capital, elpais.com.uy reported.
The crime took place on Sunday afternoon at the corner of Azara and Menorca, in the La Unión neighbourhood. Following a call about a person lying in the street, officers arrived at the scene and found the victim showing no signs of life. Medical personnel confirmed that the man had a stab wound to the intercostal region.
According to a statement from Montevideo Police Headquarters, surveillance cameras captured the moment the victim was cycling alongside a woman when he was approached by an attacker on foot. "In the images it can be seen that the attacker assaults the victim, who falls to the ground. After the incident, the perpetrator leaves the scene on the victim's bicycle, while the woman who accompanied him leaves in another direction", states the official statement.
The case was assigned to the Prosecution and the Police Homicide Department. At present, it is unknown whether it was a robbery or a settling of scores over some previous conflict.
Police officer shot during a robbery in Bella Italia
Also on Sunday, at Ernesto Pintos and Aparicio Saravia, in the Bella Italia neighbourhood, a police officer was injured by gunfire while intervening in a robbery. The assault victim told officers that he was leaving his house by car when a criminal attempted to rob him at gunpoint. When he got out of the vehicle, a police officer appeared, who had heard the screams. "When attempting to intercept the perpetrator, he fired shots at the officer, who repelled the attack", states the statement from Police Headquarters.
The officer was taken to the Police Hospital, where the on-duty doctor diagnosed a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. He was discharged during the early morning hours. The attacker abandoned the car and fled on foot; cameras in the area recorded the incident.
Man attacked by gunfire in Piedras Blancas
In another incident, in the vicinity of Domingo Arena and Aurelia Ramos de Segarra, in the Piedras Blancas neighbourhood, a 34-year-old man was injured and taken to a clinic on Avenida Belloni. Interviewed by police, he recounted that he was intercepted by two individuals travelling on a motorcycle who, without a word, shot him in a hand and a leg. The victim stated that he did not know precisely where the attack occurred or who the attackers were, and did not file a formal complaint.
Another gunshot victim in Nuevo París on Monday morning
On the morning of Monday 9 March, police officers went to the 19 de Abril clinic, in the Nuevo París neighbourhood, where another 34-year-old man had arrived with a gunshot wound to a leg. The victim indicated that he was near his home, at the intersection of Continuación La Rioja and Luis Batlle Berres, when he was shot. As in the previous case, he stated that he did not wish to file a complaint and that he did not know the identity of the attacker.
