Vente Venezuela lawyer detained without judicial order in Barinas

Detention of opposition lawyer in Barinas adds to wave of recent arrests
The Human Rights Foundation of the Llanos (Fundehullan) denounced on Sunday the detention of Marlon Maya, a lawyer and member of Vente Venezuela (VV), a party led by María Corina Machado, according to reporting by el-carabobeno.com.
Maya was arrested on Friday night at a property of his in Barinas state, in the western part of the country. Fundehullan indicated, in a post on X, that the procedure was carried out "without judicial order or flagrant circumstances", which, according to the organisation, "flagrantly violates article 44 of the Constitution—the right to personal freedom—and due process guarantees (article 49)".
The NGO demanded an end to the persecution, respect for the physical integrity of the lawyer and his immediate release. "The repressive apparatus continues as confirmed by the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission", the foundation stated.
The arrest comes in a contradictory context: following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States in January, the government led by Delcy Rodríguez announced a process of releases that has extended throughout the year and included parliamentary approval, in February, of an amnesty law. However, multiple NGOs have described that law as exclusionary.
In recent weeks, human rights organisations and activists have reported new detentions that interrupt this process. Last Tuesday, lawyer Eduardo Torres reported that trade unionist Orlando Ramírez was released on a road between Lara and Yaracuy states, after remaining detained for nearly a month—and with his whereabouts unknown—following a protest over labour grievances.
According to the NGO Foro Penal, there are currently 322 people detained for political reasons in Venezuela. The Chavista Executive denies the existence of prisoners of conscience and maintains that those detained committed crimes.
