According to amdelplata.com, Mercedes Román, lawyer for the family of Argentine citizen Germán Giuliani detained in Venezuela, stated that her client is in a "procedural limbo". In statements to the programme Mesa Chica with Alfredo Scoccimarro, Román noted that, in accordance with IACHR reports, Giuliani was tortured and his judicial guarantees were violated.
The lawyer also denounced that Giuliani's family members have been subjected to threats to prevent them from making public the conditions of his detention. "Germán's family has been threatened: if they came out to publicly report what is happening, they were told they would not help them," Román stated.
On the mechanism of releases of other detainees in Venezuela, the lawyer described an opaque process with no judicial oversight. "Releases happen in the dark, at night or in the early morning, without notifying the family members and without following a judicial process. The regime randomly decides who it releases," she noted.
Román maintained that Giuliani is innocent and linked the absence of a regular process to the lack of evidence against him. "Germán is an innocent man. The only reason the Venezuelan State violates his rights is because they have no evidence; if they did, they would have followed due process," she said.
The lawyer also questioned the position of the Argentine government in the case. "It is difficult to understand how a democratic state negotiates with a dictatorship. This requires much more intense and direct political and diplomatic pressure," she stated.
Román also pointed to what she described as a shift in tone by Javier Milei's government regarding Venezuela. "We are surprised by the opacity and ambiguity. As Venezuelans we do not understand why Milei has toned down his discourse against the dictatorship," she said.
