On Thursday, 17 July, agents of the Venezuelan regime intercepted the former mayor of Torres municipality, Lara state, Javier Oropeza, as he was leaving the facilities of the El Informador newspaper. According to ntn24.com, the operation was recorded on video: several officials surround him and place him in a vehicle.
Opposition deputy Juan Pablo Guanipa was among the first to report the incident through his social networks. "We alert that SEBIN intercepted Javier Oropeza as he was leaving the El Informador newspaper in Lara," Guanipa wrote, demanding his immediate release and describing the arrest as "state terrorism". "Enough dictatorship!", he added.
Oropeza had returned to Venezuela after spending two and a half years in Spain, where he had emigrated with his wife and two daughters following the presidential elections of 28 July. Upon his return, he presented himself at the Palace of Justice accompanied by his wife and opposition leader Jesús Guillermo López, and according to his account, both availed themselves of the Amnesty Law and obtained the dismissal of the legal cases against them.
The former municipal mayor had also reported damage to his assets: the confiscation of two farms, the seizure of the headquarters of the media outlets El Caroreño and El Diario de Lara, and a 15-year disqualification imposed by the General Comptroller's Office of the Republic.
Before his detention, Oropeza had expressed his intention to recover the confiscated assets and to promote an electoral process in which María Corina Machado could participate as a candidate.
