US Arrest Warrant Against Raúl Castro Shakes Cuba

According to notimerica.com, the Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant against former Venezuelan Parliament president Juan Guaidó, who has been in exile in the United States since April, accused of several crimes, including money laundering.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced this Thursday that three prosecutors assigned to the case will make "the respective request for a red alert to Interpol so that this individual pays for these crimes".

Guaidó, an opposition figure who presided over the so-called "interim government" of Venezuela—recognised by the United States and other countries between January 2019 and late 2022—faces additional charges of treason, usurpation of functions, embezzlement of public assets and conspiracy.

"Using the figure of a fictitious government, he caused losses to the Venezuelan State", declared Saab, who estimates at 19 billion dollars the amount allegedly misappropriated by the anti-Chavista.

The prosecutor cited a "ruling" from a United States court which, according to his words, indicates that the former deputy "has accessed the assets of Pdvsa's subsidiaries in the United States and has used them to finance himself".

Based on this, Saab hopes that, "through international criminal cooperation, this individual will be extradited to the" Caribbean country.

The Venezuelan Public Ministry has opened 23 investigations into Guaidó for alleged crimes committed during the "interim government", plus five other cases linked to a Venezuelan company in Colombia. However, until this Thursday no formal arrest warrant had been issued against him.

Guaidó did not directly respond to the accusations, although he shared an article on social media referring to the "defence" of Citgo, a Pdvsa subsidiary in the US, during his time heading the interim government.
