Suspect in China Polo case dies in road accident in Portuguesa state
B. T. M., investigated by Peru's National Police (PNP) for her alleged involvement in the murder of journalist Susy Aponte Polo—known as China Polo—died on 30 September in Venezuela as a result of a traffic accident. According to lpderecho.pe, her death occurred just days after the crime committed in Caraz, province of Áncash.
According to Venezuelan media, B. T. M. was travelling with her minor daughter and A. S., identified as her partner, in a public transport vehicle covering the route between San Cristóbal and Maracay. The vehicle hit a road divider and overturned on a motorway in Portuguesa state. B. T. M.'s daughter also died in the accident, whilst A. S. was injured.
The report from the PNP's Homicide Investigation Division, disseminated by Canal N, indicates that B. T. M. and A. S.—also identified as A. A.—had left Peru together following the murder of Aponte Polo. Both were under investigation for alleged surveillance, tracking, and operational support in the acts preceding the attack on the journalist and former regional candidate.
Police investigations indicate that, days before the crime, B. T. M. was captured by security cameras inside a hostel in Caraz. The investigation maintains that she had financed the accommodation of L. O. D.—named as the confessed perpetrator of the murder—of A. S., and of another individual with the alias Morocho.
The PNP adds that B. T. M. had also paid for the telephone used by L. O. D. and the vehicle that transported the group from Huaraz to Caraz. These elements form part of the hypotheses that the prosecutor's office and police are working on to determine the degree of participation of each person under investigation in the acts preceding the crime.
B. T. M. was a half-sister of R. T. A., who along with L. O. D. faces 18 months of preventive detention for his involvement in the murder of Susy Aponte Polo, according to the ruling from the Judiciary referred to in a previous report by lpderecho.pe. The death of B. T. M. in Venezuela leaves the investigation open as to the scope of her alleged participation and that of A. S. in the organisation of the attack.
